What the Health Insurance Marketplace is

The Health Insurance Marketplace is a service that helps people shop for and enroll in health insurance. The federal government operates it at HealthCare.gov for most states, and Tennessee is one of them, so in Tennessee the Marketplace is HealthCare.gov.

Every Marketplace plan follows Affordable Care Act rules, and plans are grouped into metal tiers so they are easier to compare. The Marketplace application also checks whether your household can get help paying premiums, based on your expected income for the year. Our guide to how ACA premium tax credits work explains the calculation, and the metal tier guide explains Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Tennessee's Marketplace is HealthCare.gov

Tennessee does not operate a separate state exchange. CMS lists it as a federally facilitated Marketplace state for plan year 2027, so Tennesseans apply, compare plans and enroll through HealthCare.gov or with a certified agent who works with it.

That means the Open Enrollment dates on this page come from HealthCare.gov, and the help options are HealthCare.gov's: its call center, its Find Local Help search, and agents certified to sell Marketplace plans in Tennessee.

When you can enroll

Most people enroll or change Marketplace plans during the annual Open Enrollment Period. Outside that window, you generally need a life change, such as losing other coverage, moving, getting married or having a baby, that opens a Special Enrollment Period.

Special Enrollment Periods have their own deadlines and may ask for documents, so it helps to act soon after the life change. Our guide to ACA Special Enrollment Periods walks through the common triggers, and health insurance between jobs covers one of the most common situations.

When the question is about a policy, not the application

Problems with a health insurance company or an existing policy go to the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, which lists 615-741-2218 and 1-800-342-4029 for policy questions. Questions about the Marketplace application itself go to HealthCare.gov.

  • Local enrollment help

HealthCare.gov describes two kinds of Marketplace-certified help: assisters, who are trained and certified by the Marketplace and required to provide fair, impartial and accurate information, and agents and brokers, who are certified to sell Marketplace plans in the states where they are licensed and are generally paid by the insurance companies whose plans they represent. Its Find Local Help tool lists both.
