How South Carolinians apply for Marketplace coverage on HealthCare.gov, when enrollment is open, and who can help.

What the Health Insurance Marketplace is

The Health Insurance Marketplace is a service that helps people shop for and enroll in health insurance. The federal government operates it at HealthCare.gov for most states, and South Carolina is one of them, so in South Carolina the Marketplace is HealthCare.gov.

Every Marketplace plan follows Affordable Care Act rules, and plans are grouped into metal tiers so they are easier to compare. The Marketplace application also checks whether your household can get help paying premiums, based on your expected income for the year. Our guide to how ACA premium tax credits work explains the calculation, and the metal tier guide explains Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

South Carolinians enroll on HealthCare.gov

South Carolina has no separate state exchange. CMS lists it as a federally facilitated Marketplace state for plan year 2027, so applications, plan comparisons and enrollment all run through HealthCare.gov or a certified agent working with it.

For South Carolinians, that means HealthCare.gov's Open Enrollment calendar shown on this page applies, along with HealthCare.gov's help options: the call center, the Find Local Help search, and agents certified to sell Marketplace plans in South Carolina.

When you can enroll

Most people enroll or change Marketplace plans during the annual Open Enrollment Period. Outside that window, you generally need a life change, such as losing other coverage, moving, getting married or having a baby, that opens a Special Enrollment Period.

Special Enrollment Periods have their own deadlines and may ask for documents, so it helps to act soon after the life change. Our guide to ACA Special Enrollment Periods walks through the common triggers, and health insurance between jobs covers one of the most common situations.

Claim and policy problems after you enroll

If a health insurance claim or policy goes wrong, the South Carolina Department of Insurance's Office of Consumer Services is the state contact, at 1-800-768-3467 or 803-737-6180. The Marketplace application itself is handled by HealthCare.gov.

HealthCare.gov describes two kinds of Marketplace-certified help: assisters, who are trained and certified by the Marketplace and required to provide fair, impartial and accurate information, and agents and brokers, who are certified to sell Marketplace plans in the states where they are licensed and are generally paid by the insurance companies whose plans they represent. Its Find Local Help tool lists both.
