What the Health Insurance Marketplace is

The Health Insurance Marketplace is a service that helps people shop for and enroll in health insurance. The federal government operates it at HealthCare.gov for most states, and Mississippi is one of them, so in Mississippi the Marketplace is HealthCare.gov.

Every Marketplace plan follows Affordable Care Act rules, and plans are grouped into metal tiers so they are easier to compare. The Marketplace application also checks whether your household can get help paying premiums, based on your expected income for the year. Our guide to how ACA premium tax credits work explains the calculation, and the metal tier guide explains Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Mississippi's Marketplace is HealthCare.gov

Mississippi does not operate a separate state exchange. CMS lists it as a federally facilitated Marketplace state for plan year 2027, so Mississippians apply, compare plans and enroll through HealthCare.gov or with a certified agent who works with it.

That means the Open Enrollment dates on this page come from HealthCare.gov, and the help options are HealthCare.gov's: its call center, its Find Local Help search, and agents certified to sell Marketplace plans in Mississippi.

When you can enroll

Most people enroll or change Marketplace plans during the annual Open Enrollment Period. Outside that window, you generally need a life change, such as losing other coverage, moving, getting married or having a baby, that opens a Special Enrollment Period.

Special Enrollment Periods have their own deadlines and may ask for documents, so it helps to act soon after the life change. Our guide to ACA Special Enrollment Periods walks through the common triggers, and health insurance between jobs covers one of the most common situations.

If your plan is ending in Mississippi next year

Before Open Enrollment, HealthCare.gov sends two letters, one from your insurance company and one from the Marketplace. Together they say whether your current plan is available next year and which plan, if any, you will be automatically re-enrolled in if you don't act.

An automatic match is not always the plan you would pick, so compare it with the other plans in your county, check your doctors and prescriptions, and update your income on the application. Choosing by the January 1 deadline shown in the Open Enrollment box above avoids a gap. Our guide to ACA Open Enrollment explains what to review.

Medicaid and CHIP in Mississippi

The HealthCare.gov application checks every household member for Medicaid and CHIP as well as for help paying Marketplace premiums. You can also apply to the Mississippi Division of Medicaid directly through Access MS.

In Mississippi, CHIP covers uninsured children up to age 19 who are not eligible for Medicaid, so a family can have children on CHIP and parents on a Marketplace plan. If a child loses Medicaid or CHIP, that loss of coverage can open a Special Enrollment Period. Our guide to ACA Special Enrollment Periods lists the other common triggers.
